Legends kicked off the days racing with their first heat won by John Marshall with Derek Pierce holding off James Clarke by 0.033 seconds to take second.  Finishing fourth but setting the fastest lap of the first heat was Jamie Clarke with 1:02.902.  The first race also saw the rare retirement,  after two laps,  of both Colin Noble and Aly Hunter.

The Legends second heat was won by Colin Noble with a race time of 7:00.192,  a race average speed of 65.798 m.p.h.,  1.208 seconds ahead of Ross Mickel with Jamie Clarke taking third.  Fastest lap was set by Ross Mickel at 1:03.450.

Colin Noble comfortably took victory in the Legends final,  finishing 2.220 seconds ahead of Malcolm Clark who held off Aly Hunter by 0.047 seconds at the line.  John Marshall finished fourth but set the fastest lap of the final at 1:02.049.

Caterhams had two races over the day.  In the first Andrew Smith took a narrow win,  0.471 seconds,  from team-mate Alasdair McCaig with Warren Dunbar,  in third,  setting the fastest lap of 1:08.798.  The second race held later in the day was again won by Andrew Smith again beating his team-mate Alasdair McCaig into second place this time by 3.841 seconds,  with Malcolm Johnstone taking third.

Minis appeared and they still seem to be intent on setting records,  the first red flag of the day came out during their practice session when the Clerk of Course questioned their driving standards and hauled them all in for a wee chat.  The first Mini race was won by Alistair McKever with the Ecurie Ecosse team-mates of Andrew Smith and Alasdair McCaig taking second and third respectively.  Fastest lap of the first race went to the race winner Alistair McKever at 1:08.175 an average speed of 67.591 m.p.h.  Alan Keith stormed to the win in the second race taking victory by 4.411 seconds from Arthur Forster in second who was a clear 4.645 seconds ahead of third placed Michael Connon.  Alistair McKever finished the second race in eighth place but still the fastest lap of the race at 1:08.377.

Qualifying for the XR2’s was held on a track which was maybe’s wet and then again maybe’s dry.  Worst caught out were the Forrest family who having led the XR2 qualifying for most of the session found themselves in traffic as the track dried out and ended up losing four places on the very last lap of the session.  Pole was taken by Andrew Martin with a time of 1:05.483.

The race unfortunately was not so good with Andrew disappearing on the first lap  closely followed by Dave Colville.  Ian Forrest came charging through from sixth on the grid to take the lead on lap 5 and was never headed,  on the last lap Sandy Forrest made his customary charge for the line,   taking second away from Andrew Allan, crossing the line 0.014 seconds ahead.  Andrew Allan had the satisfaction of taking the fastest lap of the race at 1:04.861 an average of 71.044 m.p.h.

Visiting Classes this weekend were the Northern Saloon and Sportscars.  Their first race was for their Classes B, C & D where Steven Ferguson in his Nissan Pulsar took the win in a race time of 16:12.715 ahead of Andrew Morrison in his MG ZR with George Tweddle taking third in his Ford Escort Mk2.  Fastest lap of the race also went to Steven Ferguson at 59.545 seconds.

The A, E & F Class race was won by Colin Simpson’s Marcos Mantis finishing 0.804 seconds ahead of Robert Pritchard’s Vauxhall Caterham with Neil Gregory taking third  in his Westfield.  Fastest lap went to Robert Pritchard with 56.012 seconds an average speed of 82.268 m.p.h.

Darren McWhirter ran away with the Historic Ecosse race with Jim Grant chasing hard but having to settle for second 18.735 seconds behind,  Barry Wood in his Austin Healey finished third.

In the Scottish Sports and Saloon race pole sitter Tim Bartlett charged off with John Muir in hot pursuit followed by Colin Simpson,  then it all went wrong and one by one they either retired our had mechanical gremlins which slowed them significantly.  The win went to visitor Malcolm Turnbull in his motorbike engined Westfield ahead by 6.124 seconds of Kevin Adam with Ray Pollock taking third.  Fastest lap of the race went to John Muir at 55.911 seconds.

Stuart Thorburn won the Formula Ford Zetec race after polesitter Alan Kirkcaldy lost out with a spin at the hairpin,  second place went to Leslie Mitchell with Oliver Mortimer taking third.  Alan Kikrcaldy did however set the fastest lap of the race at 54.150 seconds and average speed of 85.097 m.p.h. set on the lastest lap of the race as he was trying to make up lost ground.

25th April 2003

Heats and finals results from the 4th round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill have been loaded.

14th April 2003

Practice results,  race results and competitor lap times from the SMRC Meeting of 13th April 2003 have now been loaded.  Championship points will be loaded as soon as we get them calculated,  look back soon.

First meeting of the new SMRC Season at Knockhill on a bright,  warm and sunny day,   most uncommon for the middle of April and hopefully a sign of what we can expect for the rest of the year.

The new Mini Coopers made their first racing appearance.  Alan Keith was the fastest qualifier from their first practice session with a time of 67.89 seconds,  one hundreth of a second quicker than the second placed qualifier Alister McKever,  the top eleven cars from the session were covered by just over one second.  The second qualifying session gave the same outcome with Alan Keith setting a time of 67.74 seconds this time stretching out his advantage to three hundredths of a second over Alister McKever.  Drivers were obviously gaining more knowledge and confidence with their cars by this time as the entire sixteen car field qualified within 1.92 seconds of Alan.

The first race brought more history for the Minis first race meeting. Ronald Klos became the first driver to try out the Mini’s crash test on the Knockhill tyre barriers subsequently bringing out the first red flag of the 2003 Knockhill racing season,  and Alister McKever became the first Mini driver and competitor of the 2003 season to be excluded from the results over a Technical Infringement.  The reduced race,  over nine laps,  was won by Alan Keith a comfortable 5.25 seconds ahead of Michael Connon with Brian Sarafilvic taking third.  Michael Connon set the fastest lap of the first race at 67.88 seconds which spookily relates to an average speed of 67.88 m.p.h.,  this was to be the fastest Mini lap of the day and now stands as the Lap Record for the Class.

The second race was again won by Alan Keith from Michael Connon,  much closer at 3.25 seconds,  with Andrew Smith coming through to take third place,  fastest lap of the second race was taken by Ian Forrest,  guest driving in the Celebrity Car,  at 68.16 seconds.

Legends had Colin Noble win Heat 1 from Aly Hunter by one hundreth of a second with this pair ahead of Steve Reynolds who set the fastest lap of 62.58 seconds.  Ray Davison won Heat 2 from Derek Pierce with Colin Noble in third place and setting the fastest lap of the race at 61.97 seconds.  The final saw Malcolm Clark take a 0.54 second victory over Colin Noble,  who set the fastest lap of the Final at 62.45 seconds,  with Jamie Clarke taking third place.

Alisdair McCaig won a close race in the Caterhams over teammate Andrew Smith by 0.18 seconds.

Stuart Thorburn won the first Formula Ford race 0.39 seconds ahead of Alan Kirkcaldy with Julian Taylor in third.. Best Newcomer in the first race was eighth place Jonathan Adam.  In the second race things were mixed up a bit with Julian Taylor taking the win from Stuart Thorburn by 0.26 seconds,  both ahead of third placed Alan Kirkcaldy,  best Newcomer was again Jonathan Adam who showed a great level of consistency by again finishing in eighth place.

Sports and Saloons victory went to John Muir his Toyota Starlet comfortably ahead of Olly Ross whose Radical was rapidly making up his 30 seconds delayed start,  Alan Morrison took third place in his Rover 200.  As the Class structure for this Category has been revised all fastest laps set in the race now stand as new Class Lap Records.

In the Ford XR2’s Sandy Forrest took the race win ahead of Andrew Allan with Colin Robertson taking third place.  Best newcomer was John Swift who finished in eleventh place with a fastest lap of 66.00 seconds,  comparable to the race winners fastest lap of 64.42 seconds.

13th April 2003

Current Lap Records for all Classes timed by S.M.A.R.T. at Cadwell Park,  Croft and Knockhill have been loaded.  These files are automatically updated at each race meeting and will be loaded following each event.

1st April 2003

Heats and finals from the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the MSA British Rallycross Championship at Nutts Corner and Mondello Park loaded.

Will Gollop wins the Superfinal from Dermot Carnegie by 0.771 seconds,  sounds like a bit of déjà vu but this time Dermot sets the fastest lap of the Superfinal at 37.400 seconds.

After two attempts the Supercar final saw Will Gollop run out winner with a time of 2:38.130 and this time he sets the fastest lap of 37.864,  5 thousandths of a second quicker that Dermot Carnegies fastest lap,  third is Pat Doran whose fastest lap is 37.891 seconds,  the Supercar final also had the closest finish of the day at 0.482 seconds.

The Stock Hatch final was won by Sam Johnston although the fastest lap of the final was taken by third placed Eoin Murray at 43.904 seconds,  a sign of things to come.  Modifieds was won by Christopher Evans in his still nice and new 2000 cc Micra who beat Dave Bellerby into second place by 0.492 seconds although Dave set the fastest lap of the final at 40.121 seconds.  Junior Minicross was won comfortably,  3.410 seconds,  by Grant Rees while the Minicross Final was won even more comfortably,  4.616 seconds,  by John Binks.

A nightime drive down the biggest stretch of roadworks ever seen brought us to Mondello Park for round three of the Championship.

Lawrence Gibson wins the Superfinal from Pat Doran but he is later penalised and the win is handed to Pat who had set the fastest lap of the Superfinal at 39.042 seconds.

The Supercar finsl is won by Will Gollop in time of 2:50.916 seconds but he sets only the fourth fastest lap,  Pat Doran again sets the fastest lap at 40.644 seconds.  The Modified final had to be restarted and was won by Christopher Evans in his Micra in a time of 2:56.389 and he comfortably set the fastest lap of his final at 42.385 seconds,  0.922 seconds faster than anyone else on the grid.

Stock Hatch was won by local driver Eoin Murray in a time of 3:13.031,  Minicross found a third different winner in as many events with Ralph Budd winning with the closest finish of the day at 0.953 seconds while Junior Minicross was won by Grant Rees.

The Modified was the closest final of the day and was won by Mike Turpin in his 1600cc Vauxhall Nova by 0.492 seconds from Chris Evans in his new 2000 cc Nissan Micra which set the fastest lap of the final at 45.391 seconds,  one thousandth of a second faster than the fastest lap of Mike Turpin.

Other final winners on the day were Dermot Carnegie in Supercar,  Chris Cake in Stock Hatch,  Ian Muir in National B/Clubmans,  Gary York in Minicross and the first ever winner in the Junior Rallycross class was Ed Morris

10th January 2003

In response to requests from event organisers SMART spent time during 2002 developing software and a format which would allow competitors,  officials and the press to access,  download and print results through the internet for those meetings where SMART provided their timekeeping and results service.  January 2003 sees the launch of the website where results from all meetings attended by SMART through 2002 can be accessed and race results along with competitors individual lap times are available in a PDF format.

This is a draft form of the website and development will continue as we progress to the start of the 2003 season.
